New perspective to Goal Setting

Everyone sets goals at various times in their life, some actually do whatever is necessary to achieve them and even fewer actually achieve them.  

Here is a different perspective to setting goals which should provide an inherent motivation to the individual setting them.

Step 1: List down the important areas of your life

E.g. Career, Finances, Health, Family etc.

Step 2: Under each area set some practical goals for 2024
E.g. Career: I want to get into a different role
Finances: I want to set up a MF SIP for every member of my family
Health: I want to reduce weight by 5kg
Family: I want to go to an international destination with family.

Step 3: Visualization
Now visualize that you are on 31st Dec, 2024 and are looking back at the year gone by. 
Look at each goal as if you have already achieved it. 
Goal: I travelled to Dubai for a vacation with my family 

Now answer the following questions for each goal.

Describe the goal you have achieved
We travelled to Dubai in Sep. We stayed at ABC hotel. We visited major attractions like Burj Khalifa....

How are you feeling now that you have achieved this goal?
Feeling so good about myself that I could take my family for this lovely vacation

What did you do during the year to achieve it? 
I contacted a travel agency in Jan and took all the details. 
I contacted my friend Ravi who has travelled to Dubai many times and took his opinion. 
I booked the package in Feb.

Did you encounter any challenges? If yes, how did you overcome them?
Finance was an issue since the budget was around Rs. 3 lakhs. I moved Rs. 1 lakh from my savings account to a FD in Jan. I kept aside Rs.20000 from my salary. I postponed the decision to do a leadership training for which the fees was Rs. 60000 to later in the year.

Doing the above exercise for each goal will help you identify the actions that you will now need to implement, the challenges and how to overcome them and importantly will help you get in touch with your feelings when you have actually achieved the goal.
